Associate Professor, Wake Forest School of Medicine

Dr. Werner Bischoff, Associate Professor of Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine is the Medical Director and Health System Epidemiologist overseeing the Department of Infection Prevention and Health System Epidemiology at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, Lexington Medical Center, Davie Medical Center, and Wilkes Medical Center. Dr. Bischoff’s research focuses primarily on the transmission dynamics of human pathogens, including viruses such as influenza and the common cold. He has developed and successfully implemented a novel aerosolization technology allowing the accurate delivery of viable pathogen carrying particles in defined, mono-dispersed sizes (droplet nuclei and large droplet sizes.) He also has conducted multiple field studies testing the efficacy of commonly used barrier precautions such as face masks during routine care activities. Dr. Bischoff received his medical degree at the Georg-August-University Goettingen, Germany, his Doctorate in Medicine at the Medical School Hannover, Germany, and his board certification in Hygiene and Environmental Medicine in Germany. He obtained a Master of Science in Clinical and Population Translational Science at Wake Forest University and a PhD in Epidemiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He has served on several scientific review panels (CDC, NIH, DoD), received multiple research grants and has conducted industry-sponsored projects focusing on pathogen transmission dynamics and the efficacy of personal protective equipment.
